Languages: Gateways to Global Communities
Essay of the Year
The Essay of the Year belongs to High School Division Winner Lauren Allegrezza from Notre Dame Academy. In her essay Lauren describes how foreign languages are vehicles to appreciate someone’s culture:
“Languages offer an incredible way to dive into the cultures of other places around the world. By learning a foreign language, a visitor to a foreign country can feel less like they are looking in on another life and instead feel they are a part of it. Learning a people's language helps to see their world from their perspective. Words can give insight to cultural mores, history and outlook; through the development of language there is also development of life. Communicating in someone else's native language shows the respect for their culture and way of life that can go miles in terms of creating friendly connections with other nations. Through these connections, it is possible that nations around the world can find an appreciation of the wonderful diversity found here on Earth.”
Lauren’s teacher is Valerie Kerxhalli. Congratulations to Lauren and Valerie!

Elementary School Winner (Grades 1-4)
The Elementary School Division Winner is Camella Pershad from Jackson-Mann School expressed:
“Foreign languages are the life of our country. They build us up. Languages are the sweet words of speech. Languages are strength. Language is intelligence, words, and smarts. Language is a state of communication. Languages make up the world. I think that learning a new language is like taking part of the world inside of you. Some languages may be hard, but it is a great accomplishment when you learn them. You can be part of the global community, too. All you have to do is TRY.”
